What is Mud Fever
Mud Fever is not one condition but a collection of clinical signs linked to a number of different causes. It is particularly evident during the wet, winter months. Mud fever is also known as pastern dermatitis, dew poisoning or greasy heel.

Mud Fever is common, but not just limited to horses’ legs after being stood in  muddy ground. It appears in many forms, for example, on a horse’s back it is known as Rain Scald.

There are many factors which can cause this condition, these include:
Genetics (white skin and feathers are more likely to become irritated),
Chemical irritants and allergies (such as insect bites or rubbing from dirty tack/boots)
Environment (wet and muddy conditions can weaken and break the skin allowing bacteria to invade the area).

Bacteria in the environment and other pathogens such as Dermatophilus Congolensis living in the mud invade the skin when it is weakened by excess moisture. This causes irritation and inflammation which, in turn, creates scabs that leads to soreness and reddening of the skin. Immediate removal from the wet and muddy environment is essential. If heat and welling  in the affected area persists, then veterinary attention should be sought.
